A typical trait of growing businesses is over a period of time they become fat and lazy. In the beginning, they were slick and lean, the business owner was at the heart of everything. But as the businesses grew, more people got involved in the processes, bad habits formed with poor disciplines and over complexity.

There’s a strong belief the only way out is to throw more staff at it!

This leads to increased overhead costs, poor customer experience and frustration for all staff. The Business Owner gets really frustrated “ahhhhh, business used to be so much easier!”

“it is not the most intellectual of the species that survives; it is not the strongest that survives, but the species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself.” Charles Darwin Origin of Species

This is equally so for businesses. Just look at the number of big brands that since 2000 have disappeared. And why? Because they didn’t keep up with their changing market. And these are big companies with a big brand, huge resources and masses of intellect.

You must adapt and change to your changing environment.

Technology can play and should play a big part in your business. So much more can be achieved for less cost by using technology and automation. Your customers will increasingly be wanting more, faster and with less complexity.
Look at the companies that are disrupting traditional business models and the speed of their growth. The app-based bank accounts that take ten minutes to open and you receive a debit card two days later. The account can use anywhere in the world, in any currency fee-free. In three years Monzo has grown from zero to 1.6m customers!

Why? Because customers want more, faster and with less complexity.

Now the good news

there is a better way. However, it’s going to take a lot of courage and some time. I know you haven’t got any extra time, you’re far too busy!

I’ll give you a really strong reason why you should…

Because if you don’t your competitor’s will and you’ll get left behind and at a great rate of speed.

So, if you want to stay in the game you need to take time to review all your processes from sales lead to invoice:

  1. What is it you do?
  2. What actions add value to your customer or the business?

At every step:

  1. What would happen if you stopped doing that step?
  2. How can you automate that step or use technology to reduce cost, save time or provide a better process to your customer?
  3. Can you combine steps to remove duplication or complexity?
  4. Is the process as simple as possible for your customers?

Remember, customers want more, faster and with less complexity.

How can you disrupt your industry?

“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get the same result” Henry Ford – Founder of the Ford Motor Company

So, what do you do now?

If you’ve read this far, you’re clearly not happy with your business. As I see it you now have 3 choices:

Choice 1

Do nothing! And surprisingly many won’t do anything different. They’ll carry on seeking for the magic wand! Or better still bury their head in sand in a vain hope something will happen.

One of my clients and now good friends, Adrian, has a great saying (he’s from Yorkshire, so it’s even better in his accent!):

“Only s**t happens, everything else you have to make happen yourself!”

Choice 2

Take action by implementing some or all the actions above.

Great stuff and good luck, you’ll be well on your way to very quickly having a much easier business to manage, you’ll feel rejuvenated and start to really enjoy your business again.
